The National Museum of Western Art was established in April 1959 and was based on the Matsukata Collection focusing on the Impressionist paintings and sculptures, such as Courbet, Monet, Renoir, The Thinker, The Gates of Hell created by Auguste Rodin previously stored by the French government. New Wing was completed in 1979, the year marking the 20th anniversary of the National Museum of Western Art.
The Main Building was designed by the internationally renowned 20th century French architect Le Corbusier.
