The Sanno Festival (Sanno Matsuri), one of the three most famous festival of Tokyo, is held around the middle of June every even-numbered years. It is famous as a festival permitted by the Shogun to enter the grounds of Edo Castle during the Edo Period (1603-1867), along with the Kanda Matsuri. The parade walk through central Tokyo for eleven hours. Two imperial carriages and one Mikoshi (portable shrine) are carried by 500 people who wear traditional court costumes.
